What if I don't have a partner?

The nice thing about gay square dancing is that you don't need a steady partner.  Most of the time you will be dancing with different people with each tip.  The protocol is to simply fill the square wherever there is an opening.  This is a great way to meet new people!

Is there a dress code?

No.  Jeans and T-shirts are the most common attire worn during gay square dancing.  Optional club wear is available for purchase, which we often wear at special events.  But, wearing them is not required.

How much do dances and classes cost per event?

Presently, Empire Squares charges $6.00 per dance class, for 2 1/2 hours of instruction.  Club dances are also $6.00 for 3 hours of dancing. You can also come to the open microphone for an additional hour of  dancing.

What is the relative mix of men and women?

Demographics varies with each club, primarly based on geographic location and availability.  In regards to gender, our club is about 50% men and 50% women.  There are also non gay/lesbian dancers in our club.  Our club is open to all, regardless of sexual orientation.

What if I don't have rhythm?

Square dancing does not require special dance ability.  This is not the ballet.  However, it is not uncommon to feel uncoordinated at times. Because a square is dependent on eight people, there are ample opportunities for the square to break down and opportunities to recover. That's what makes square dancing so much fun!  Class instruction will give you plenty of practice.  Also, there are experienced dancers, called Angels, there to help you through.  Your primary challenge is to keep your concentration while having a good time.

What is a fly-in?

Various clubs around the country sponsor special weekend-long dances called "fly-in's."  The name comes from the fact that most attendees have to travel (fly) to the event.  These events are terrific fun and a great way to see part of the country you may not have seen before.  It also a great way to meet new people and see old friends.

Since Empire Squares is located is in the Inland Empire, California, we have the opportunity to attend several excellent fly-in's within a short driving distance.  Some of the best are hosted by Finest City Squares' fly-in "Pass the Sea" in San Diego, which is held in March, and Shoreline Squares' excellent "Zoom to the Beach" held in October every year.  These are a must-attend events!

What is the IAGSDC?

This acronym stands for International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs.  Essentially, it is an organizaton of gay square dance clubs from around the country (and the world).  Check out the link on our home page.

What is the International convention?

Think of this convention as the Olympics of fly-in events (see above). This weekend-long event, which typically attracts 1100 dancers from around the world, is held in different cities each year.  They have been held for the past 21 years, and grows larger each year.  It is the premier event of the year.

Some of the venues in recent years have included Vancouver, Toronto, Phoenix & Santa Clara.  Next year the convention will held in our back yard - Anaheim, California.  This is sure to be a well attended convention you won't want to miss.
