Sound Effects

Sound effects are an important part of square dancing. Some are used to remind dancers of a sequence of moves (see Linear Cycle), some help with the timing of a call, and some are just a chance to yell back at the caller and have a laugh. Not all calls have sound effects or they are simply no longer used, but below is a list of calls and the accompanying sound effects that you will hear at dances all around the country. There are regional variations and dancers continually come up with new "effects", some of which may gain popularity and become part of the tradition.
