Community Square Dancing

Puddletown Squares will be having a Community Square Dance with caller Neil Smith, March 29th at West Seattle Tibbets Methodist Church, 3940 41st Ave SW, from 7–9:30pm. $10 dollars at the door.

Square dancing is fun for all ages and is a great alternative to the bars for the gay community. Longtime dancer and treasurer of Puddletown Squares, Ross Crawshaw-Lopton says, "Square Dancing is one of the few events in our community where not only do men and women have fun together, but they bring their kids and their parents and their straight friends!"

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to square dance?

Not at all. No experience required. The Community Dance Program is a big change from the type of square dancing that Puddletown Squares usually does, in that dancers can come when they can and learn everything they need to dance that evening. The caller calls squares, mixers, circle dances, traditional dances, contras, trios, and mecolanzas. The dances are easily learned and always walked through before dancing them.

Do I have to wear square dance clothes?

You are certainly welcome too, but it is not required. It is most important that you wear something comfortable to dance in. Square dancing takes a lot of energy! Also, good shoes, preferably with soles that will slide, are a must.

Do I have to bring a dance partner?

Not at all. Singles are always welcome! There is always someone to dance with at Puddletown!

Can I bring my kids?

Absolutely, although tweens and older will enjoy it most. Any smaller and they are liable to get squished.

But I'm not gay!

That's okay! Everyone is welcome!

Can I dance with Puddletown all the time?

At our regular dances, we dance a form of square dancing called "Modern Western Square Dancing" (MWSD). Unlike the traditional forms of square dancing danced at a Community Square Dance, MWSD does not have any set patterns. The dancers have to know how to do all the calls and be able to react in time with the music as the caller creates the dance on the fly. It takes several months of lessons and a lot of practice to dance at a MWSD.

If you really enjoy Community Square Dance and would like to give MWSD a try, we offer "Taste of Square Dancing" events a couple times a year.

Why is puddletown doing this?

Because we think Square Dancing is a whole lot of fun and we want to share it with as many people as we can. A lot of people don't have time to take lessons to be able join us at our club dances, and this way they can join us when ever we are holding a Community Square Dance.
